🧠 How Spring Weight & Length Affect Typing Feel

When selecting TX Springs, you're tuning two key factors in how your switches behave: weight (how much force is required to press the key) and length (how the spring behaves during travel and return). These both shape the overall responsiveness, smoothness, and bottom-out feel of your keyboard.

⚖️ Spring Weight

Spring weight determines how much resistance you feel when pressing a key. Lighter weights (like 50g or 55g) offer a breezy, low-fatigue experience, ideal for fast typists or tactile builds. Medium weights like 60g and 62g hit the sweet spot for most users—balanced between responsiveness and control. Heavier springs like 65g or 75g give a more deliberate, firm keypress, favoured for "thockier" builds or when using heavier keycaps like SA profile or Cerakeys. Some heavier typists prefer these too.

Keep in mind that the listed weight refers to the bottom-out force, not actuation. A 60g spring typically actuates around 45–50g and bottoms out at 60g.

📏 Spring Length

Spring length changes how the force is applied and how the switch feels across its travel. Medium (15mm) springs offer a more traditional MX-like response. Moving up to Long (16mm) or Extra Long (18mm) increases the pre-load on the stem, making the key feel smoother on the way down and snappier on the way up. These springs also help reduce spring ping and can make the bottom-out feel softer.

Ultra Extra Long (22mm) springs create an even more cushioned downstroke and ultra-fast return. They're popular with enthusiasts chasing buttery smoothness and “fast yet thocky” builds.

🧪 Which Should You Choose?

  • For fast, floaty builds: Go for 50g–55g in Extra Long or Ultra Long formats. These are popular in linears where speed and comfort are key.
  • For deeper acoustics and control: 60g–65g Long or Extra Long springs give you a more substantial press with smoother return.
  • For traditional feel or tactiles: Medium length springs in 60g–62g preserve switch character without over-preloading.
  • If you're unsure: 60g Long (16mm) is the community’s most popular choice—balanced, smooth, and compatible with most build styles.

Your preferences will vary and that's entirely fine, the above is just a guide on how I like to work with springs in my builds.
