Mental health in the keyboard community

Custom Mechanical Keyboards and Mental Health

Recently I did a talk at the MKUK (mechanical keyboards UK) meetup in Leeds. I wanted to share some of that content in a blog post here.

Custom mechanical keyboards have become more than just a tool for typing; they have evolved into a creative outlet and a form of self-expression for many enthusiasts. Beyond the satisfying click-clack of keys and colorful keycaps, custom keyboards can have a positive impact on mental health.

Building and customizing a mechanical keyboard fosters a sense of accomplishment and creativity. The process of researching components, selecting switches, lubing switches, assembling the board, and customizing keycaps can be a therapeutic and meditative experience. The tactile feedback of each key press can also provide a calming sensory experience, reducing anxiety and promoting focus.

Moreover, the customization aspect allows individuals to personalize their keyboard based on their preferences, whether it's a specific color scheme, keycap profile, or switch type. This level of customization can empower users to create a work environment that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also comfortable and enjoyable to use.

For those who spend long hours at their computer, particularly in high-stress environments, a custom mechanical keyboard can offer a reprieve from the monotony of typing on a standard-issue keyboard. The unique feel and sound of each keystroke can make typing a more engaging and enjoyable activity, potentially reducing stress and improving overall well-being.

In a world where technology often dominates our daily lives, custom mechanical keyboards provide a tangible connection to the digital world while offering a grounding and mindful experience. So, whether you're a seasoned keyboard enthusiast or someone looking to delve into the world of custom keyboards, remember that taking the time to build and personalize your keyboard can be a rewarding journey for both your setup and your mental health.
